Pika H3 Flex vs H3 Max (and MiniMax H3): Speed, Price and Quality Compared

Nov 1, 2026PikaH3Flex EditorialPikaH3Flex Editorial

How Pika H3 Flex compares with H3 Max and the MiniMax H3 base it is built on: latency, per-second price, quality metrics and where each one wins, from Pika’s published benchmarks.

Short answer: Pika H3 Flex is the faster, cheaper member of the H3 family, and on Pika’s own benchmarks it matches or beats H3 Max on most quality metrics. Pika reports Flex at about 1.8× lower latency than H3 Max (as served on fal), a starting price of $0.01 per output second against $0.0325 for H3 Max and $0.08 for MiniMax H3, and higher scores on five of seven automatic quality metrics. H3 Max keeps a slight edge on audio-video and text-video alignment, and human raters preferred other systems for physics and action-heavy scenes.

All numbers here come from Pika’s technical report. They are vendor benchmarks, so treat them as a starting point and test your own prompts.

How the three models relate

  • MiniMax H3 is the 33B-parameter audio-video base model from MiniMax, sampled in 50 steps.
  • H3 Max is the higher-end H3 offering Pika benchmarked against, using the version hosted on fal (“Fal H3 Max”).
  • Pika H3 Flex is Pika’s post-trained H3: a LoRA that distills sampling to six steps and adds reward tuning for aesthetics and instruction following. See how the 6-step sampler works.

Speed: where the 1.8× comes from

Pika measured latency against Fal H3 Max on text-to-video, image-to-video and 10-second reference-to-video:

  • Text/image to video: about 1.5× faster at 5 s and roughly 2× faster at 10 and 15 s, which Pika says matches Fal H3 Max Turbo.
  • Reference to video: 1.3–1.7× faster with image or image-plus-audio references, 1.6–1.9× with video references.

Separately, Pika’s serving optimizations (fused kernels, FlashAttention-4, block-sparse attention) cut full inference for a five-second 768p clip with audio from 3.409 s to 2.129 s on eight B300 GPUs. That is server compute, not the time you wait in a web app, which also includes queueing, upscaling and download.

Quality: automatic metrics

Pika’s Table 3 compares models on the same prompt set at 768p (higher is better):

MetricPika H3 FlexMiniMax H3Fal H3 Max
VT (visual quality)12.311.710.6
VA (visual quality)5.415.285.00
KVQ (visual quality)0.0240.0220.019

AA (audio quality)7.026.856.89
A-V (audio-video alignment)0.2120.2080.216
T-V (text-video alignment)0.2250.2250.226

Flex leads on the five visual and audio quality scores; alignment is essentially a tie, with H3 Max marginally ahead.

Quality: human preference

In Pika’s Elo-style human study, Flex was preferred for human anatomy, complex composition and audio sync in text/image-to-video, and for visual style, framing and camera motion in reference-to-video. Other systems were preferred for physics, multi-scene narrative, lighting and materials, and action-heavy or control-video tasks. At launch Pika also reported Flex as #1 among open-weight models and #7 overall on DesignArena’s text-to-video leaderboard.

Which should you use?

  • Choose Pika H3 Flex for fast iteration, short-form social and ad clips with sound, people-centric shots, and when cost per take matters. It is also the only one of the three you can run locally as a small adapter.
  • Test H3 Max for physics-heavy action, complex lighting and materials, or multi-scene storytelling, where Pika’s own study shows Flex is not the favorite.
  • Use MiniMax H3 base mainly if you are building your own fine-tunes and want the original 50-step model.

The cheapest way to decide is to run the same prompt through each. You can try Flex right now with text to video or image to video, and compare it with another popular model in Pika H3 Flex vs Seedance 2.5.

FAQ

Is Pika H3 Flex better than H3 Max? On Pika’s benchmarks it scores higher on five of seven automatic quality metrics and is about 1.8× faster, but H3 Max is slightly better on alignment and was preferred for physics and action scenes.

Is Pika H3 Flex cheaper than H3 Max? Yes — from $0.01 per output second versus $0.0325 for Fal H3 Max in Pika’s comparison.

Is Pika H3 Flex the same as MiniMax H3? It is MiniMax H3 plus Pika’s LoRA: same base architecture, six-step sampling instead of 50, plus Pika’s fine-tuning and reward tuning.
